28th Jan 2012 - Belper Main Line Calls Case Study

The Friends are undertaking a study to see if there is a business case to increase the number of stops that main lines trains make at Belper so as to create a better link to Chesterfield, Sheffield and the north. At present only one train stops each week day and that is early morning and only in one direction! In recent years there have been a few more stoppers that residents found very useful. The costs associated with extra stops are minimal but the benefits and revenue must be weighed against the potential disadvantages for main line passengers who may have slightly lengthened journeys.
To this end the Friends undertook an on train survey on 22 trains, both on the main line and the Derwent Valley line, during November 2011 and got nearly 700 forms back. East Midlands Trains kindly gave permission for this. The survey will help us understand what the issues are and other studies are being undertaken. If a business case can be made then it will be presented to the government for consideration when the franchise comes up for review.

Anyone with interest in better rail conections from Belper to the North are welcome to contact the Friends via either our Guestbook or Contact Us pages.
